“Do crunches for belly fat. Do inner-thigh moves to slim your thighs. ”Your body isn’t a TV remote. You can’t point it at one spot. Here’s the honest science.
It is the oldest promise in fitness: do this move to burn the fat from that spot. Crunches for the belly. Leg raises for the thighs. It feels so logical, the muscle you work must burn the fat sitting on top of it. But that is not how your body burns fat. Mostly. There is one honest twist we will get to.
MEET THE PLAYERS – HOW YOUR BODY ACTUALLY BURNS FAT When you need energy, your body pulls fat from stores all over the body, not just the muscle you are working. That fat travels through your blood to be burned. It does not jump straight from your belly into your abs.Where you lose fat first is mostly set by your genes and hormones, not the exercise you pick. Understanding the difference between burning fat vs losing fat is key to managing your expectations.
PART 1 Crunches don’t burn belly fat
This has been tested, more than once. In one study, people did 7 ab exercises, 5 days a week for 6 weeks, on a steady diet. The result? No extra loss of belly fat, body fat, or waist size compared to people who did nothing.¹ Their ab muscles got stronger. The fat on top stayed the same. Working a muscle is not the same as burning the fat over it. If you are recovering from childbirth or core weakness, you should focus on diastasis recti safe core workouts instead of standard crunches to safely strengthen the area.
PART 2 It’s the same for every body part
Maybe abs are special? No. In a clever study, people trained only one leg for weeks. If spot reduction were real, that leg should have gotten leaner. It did not. Fat came off the whole body, and if anything, a little more from the upper body, not the trained leg.² Your body decides where fat leaves, and it spreads the job around. Many women worry about this when lifting weights, wondering if they will look blocky, but learning the truth about toning reveals how muscle building actually alters your shape.
Spot reduction = the idea that training a body part burns the fat sitting on top of it. For the most part, it does not work that way.
PART 3 The honest twist (a 2023 study)
Here is where we stay honest, because the science is not fully closed. In 2023, a careful study matched two groups for the calories they burned. One group did treadmill only. The other did treadmill plus abdominal endurance work. The ab group lost a bit more trunk fat.³
READ THIS CAREFULLY It was a small effect, in one small study, in men. It does not mean crunches melt belly fat. But it does mean the door is not fully shut. The big rule still stands: total fat loss comes first.
Trunk fat change after 10 weeks, energy-matched groups (Brobakken 2023, n=16 men). One small study, not proof crunches burn fat.
SO HOW DO YOU SHAPE A “PROBLEM” AREA?
You can’t spot-burn fat, but you can absolutely change how an area looks:
- Lose overall body fat. A calorie deficit lowers fat everywhere, including your target spot (see Vol 1 and Vol 2). Utilizing custom meal plans for glute growth and lean mass retention can help optimize this process.
- Build the muscle underneath. Training the area shapes and firms it, even if the fat leaves body-wide. Focus on progressive overload to structural shape; for example, you can learn how to round out v shaped glutes by building specific muscular zones.
- Be patient. Stubborn spots (belly, hips, thighs) are usually the last to go. That timing is genetic, not a personal failure. Real results take time, which is apparent when tracking your journey, such as looking at what to expect from a 6 week booty transformation.
BOTTOM LINE You can’t tell your body to burn fat from one exact spot by training it. Fat leaves from all over, in an order your genes mostly decide. One 2023 study found a small exception, but the rule holds: lower your total body fat, build the muscle underneath, and your target area will follow.
